The day has finally come, the
CUMECS-2 team are all arriving on the OGS Explora in the Port of Catania,
Sicily, this afternoon. Team members from various countries (Italy, Malta, New
Zealand, Belgium and UK) are making their way on to the vessel. All smiles
and greets as all team members introduce themselves and made us feel welcome on
the ship. After months of e-mail exchange, we finally get to meet face-to-face
and curiously find out who we will be sharing a cabin with. Check out the video
showing the trip made by some of the Maltese contingent from Malta to OGS
Explora.
The OGS Explora is a 41 year-old vessel, well equipped with state-of-the-art
geophysical equipment, which is necessary for this scientific expedition. The ship has a
regular schedule of scientific trips across the globe; before this trip she was
on a mission in the Black Sea.
As night falls, we decide to
head out for dinner in the beautiful city of Catania. This will be our only
time all together onshore before we start our mission, which will involve
4-hour work shifts throughout the day and night. Spoilt for choice, we indulge
ourselves in delicious Sicilian food.
